Big Hole Diablo Dark Ale
I had two of these last night at a birthday party, straight from the bottle because that’s more commodious for sitting beside a firepit, chucking balled-up pieces of shredded beer label into the fire. I’m a little confused about the name, frankly; I didn’t perceive anything particularly devilish about the beer. It did go really well with the fire, though, so I guess that counts for something. Not super complex to my tastebuds; just malty delicious, strong, and sweet. Warming, but thirst-quenching, with a raisinish aftertaste. I will definitely be drinking more of this style and probably more of the same beer, and I’m looking forward to finding out what it tastes like from a glass.
I also had a little sip of Heavy Seas Gold Ale, one of my beers of the month, from the bottle and not quite cold enough out of the fridge. Still pretty tasty and I think I’ll enjoy this in a glass too.

Do you have Heavy Seas recommendations?

Loose Cannon is remarkable, for those of us that like IPAs: http://www.hsbeer.com/loose-cannon-american-hop3-ale
Winter Storm is a very nice beer for cold weather, that’s quite heavy and hoppy without being a straight out stout or porter: http://www.hsbeer.com/winter-storm-–-category-5-ale
And they brew an Uber Pils. Not enough beers are brewed in this style for my taste: http://www.hsbeer.com/small-craft-warning-–-über-pils
I haven’t had too much else from them, but in general I like them. They don’t brew exactly to style, but they are well informed by the styles they are working within. I think they’re great, and if you’re a fan of Dogfish Head I think they’re a worthwhile brewery to check out for big beers. Also it’s great to see an East Coast brewery rocking it, and I think being kind of typically “East Coast.”
