    Protip:

Get yourself a Surly Bender, pair it with some Goodhue Wash, and thank me later. N.B., mine, also picked up at Surdyk’s, did have crystals in it. Yum. So much synergy, I can’t even tell you where the buttery/chocolate/nutty flavors were coming from.

Levy won’t believe this, but I’d never had a Shiner Bock till last week! Fixed now. I can see how it’d be an epiphany beer; biscuity, but so easy that I blinked and my glass was empty. After that, a Founder’s Curmudgeon Old Ale redolent of caramel and bananas — and booze! Kind of like bananas Foster before you set it on fire, come to think of it.

Redolent of caramel, bananas and booze indeed! Apt description of that one!

Sierra Nevada Glissade Golden Bock. This beer is wonderful and I really want to write about it, but I’m not sure what yet.

New Glarus Uff-da, knitting on the couch

Abby and Amanda were kind enough to bring some New Glarus Uff-da Bock, procured on a recent drive through Wisconsin, to our Sunday afternoon knitting and beer date.

Om nom nom nom New Glarus Uff-da

Om nom nom nom New Glarus Uff-da

The bottle came over on Amanda’s bike, so in the moments before I took this picture, the head was crazy bubbly all the way up at the top of the glass. Another that-looks-like-a-Co-Cola, to be sure. It seems I’m fond of those. Sweet malty mother of jesus, this beer is delicious. I can’t pin down the aroma – something tangy and/or fruity, a red herring for the actual taste, which is all things delicious. Malt, caramel, bread, light brown sugar, maple syrup! Only the bread stays behind as the aftertaste fades in my mouth, making me think I should definitely drink some more immediately. Oh yum. Instant contender for most delicious beer I’ve had.

Not only is this another beer Sam can’t have, but I can’t have it either unless and until I go to Wisconsin to get it. New Glarus also makes Raspberry Tart, which Beer School spent like half an hour salivating over, plus Wisconsin sure has a lot of cheese and sheep. Thus, Wisconsin is racking up points in the category of good places to get away for a weekend.

Summit Maibock: such is my devotion to NMD

So I took a detour from stoutville, sort of a calculated rookie mistake. I went to a party tonight and my choices were some kind of Leinenkugel, Summit Maibock, and a mojito. Well, except clearly the mojito is not a viable option at this juncture. I knew going in that I wasn’t going to love either beer, but I forged ahead in the name of science. I enjoyed the hell out of some Leinenkugel Honey Weiss last summer at the peanut bar, but this was not that, so no. Maibock is another type to which I haven’t graduated, but I predict that I still won’t love this stuff when I do; I tasted bitter, dry, and bitter with notes of more bitter that turned to an aftertaste of ass on the way to the next party. Maybe some malt in there somewhere. Mostly just bitter. Admittedly, I drank it straight from the bottle and pairing choices weren’t so great. It was just ok with Humboldt Fog (delicious, delicious go-to party cheese; deserves better) on a cracker, and the less said about the chocolate macaroon, the better. I also ended up wearing the Maibock due to an incident of startlement involving our hostess’s dog. It smells like beer. These are the lengths I go to for you, No Mixed Drinks!

I haven’t gotten too into Bock’s yet; Trader Joe’s has one that I didn’t think all that much of. Bock’s might be the graduate school that I drop out of to play World of Warcraft all day.

I’m with you that drinking something bitter out of a bottle isn’t going to help. It’s going to take all that bitter and throw it in your facehole.

Maybe the beer had just turned?

Also I can’t read “Maibock” without thinking “Maybach”, a very different kind of thing. :)
